Receiving NOAA Images from Space

Wait, I can do that?

Summary

Here is my attempt to capture NOAA satellite images using a cheap RTL-SDR and patience around 137MHz as they fly overhead.

So I wanted to capture NOAA satellite images using a RTL-SDR.  The list of things needed are pretty small, but I added some optional pieces because I’m having a really hard time getting decent signal.  Here is a list of things you’ll need:

  • A RTL-SDR (the dongles start at like $15) or a different radio, like the HackRF
  • A computer (even a RaspberryPi, but I haven’t gone that route)
  • An antenna
  • Software to capture the signal, like SDR# or SDRConsole or HDSDR
  • Software to decode the image from the raw signal, like WXtoIMG
  • A LNA (low noise amplifier) – optional
  • A FM trap – optional

I’ll add some updates when I actually get some good results.
